On September 12th, ScienceOpen and HTWK Leipzig will be organizing the Road to Open Meta Conference, where some of the publishing industry’s best will discuss metadata communications and difficulties within, and introduce solutions derived from best practices and innovations.
ScienceOpen and HTWK Leipzig will also present the results of their BMBF-funded projects, respectively OA Meta and OA-STRUKTKOMM, at the conference.

While we encourage everyone to spread the news and invite fellow peers who are interested in the topic, in today’s blog we will introduce some of the conference’s topics and speakers.
Status quo and challenges within metadata communication
Prof. Dr. Mark Mietzner, Rector of HTWK, Kirsten Neumann of VDI/VDE Technik + Innovation, and Prof. Dr. Michael Reiche, project leader of OA-STRUKTKOMM, will give opening remarks to set the context for the conference and welcome guests. Prof. Dr. Alexander Grossmann, HTWK Leipzig professor of publishing and project management in media companies and President of ScienceOpen, will moderate the conference.
The conversation on open meta will kick off with an introductory session by our keynote speakers Jeremy Morse from the University of Michigan Library and Tasha Mellins-Cohen from Project COUNTER. Both Jeremy and Tasha have extensive experience in the field and have been engaged with different stakeholders in the field of open access, scholarly publishing, and metadata communication.
Jeremy Morse will share his experience of working with metadata, explaining how metadata gets out into the world (and how it doesn’t), by providing workflow diagrams to illustrate this status quo and identify challenges.
Tasha Mellins-Cohen will provide further input on the topic, covering the ways in which COUNTER metrics can and should be used with Open Access materials, the differences between books and other types of content, and why chapter-level metadata is critical to accurate metrics.
Various stakeholders of the Open Science and Open Access communities will round up the event by investigating questions on what makes systemic metadata communication difficult and how to overcome those metadata communication challenges for better distribution and discoverability results.
Presenting results of OA-META and OA-STRUKTKOMM projects
As the book publishing ecosystem continues to rely on traditional print publication processes, the industry’s infrastructure is developing new methods to improve the discovery, visibility, and persistency of data for academic book content in digital research environments.
With the project OA-META, ScienceOpen has been helping the effort of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in speeding up the transition to Open Access (OA) since 2021. Nina Tscheke, project manager for OA-META, will present the project’s main development, the BookMetaHub, a freely accessible platform for publishers to support them with upgrading their data for indexing in digital environments.
The HTWK Leipzig has been simultaneously implementing the OA-STRUKTKOMM project, focusing on simplifying the establishment of a wide variety of OA publication and communication structures and developing the necessary tools and strategies to help the widespread introduction of the already developed state-of-the-art workflow. Diana Tillmann, project manager for OA-STRUKTKOMM, will present the project’s most important results and findings.
Keeping the conversation going during the poster session
During our lunch break, we want to keep the conversation going. All participants will be able to learn more about our and other similar OA projects during the poster session, where posters from other BMBF projects in the funding guidelines for accelerating the transformation to Open Access will be on display. So grab something to eat while learning more about what’s happening and transforming in the German publishing landscape towards open access!

How has open access changed the way we use metadata?
The impact of Open Access on the research ecosystem extends far beyond how we purchase and read books and journal articles. On many levels, it influences how we share information.
Stephanie Dawson, CEO of ScienceOpen, will moderate a panel discussion at the conference on how open access has changed the way we use metadata to evaluate research. Ronald Snijder of the OAPEN Foundation, Franziska Bühring of De Gruyter, Markus Putnings of the University Library of Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, and Christian Kohl, an independent consultant and project manager, will speak on the panel.
The panel discussion will look at how new metadata requirements for Open Access books are affecting and changing the academic book publishing landscape.
Presentations
In further presentations, problematic areas within metadata and cross-system communication will be highlighted and approaches to various solutions will be presented.
This session’s speaker lineup includes:
- Jennifer Kemp of Crossref will present some best practices and emerging developments in the field, as well as explore the roles of various stakeholders in supporting metadata and discoverability.
- Dirk Pieper of the University of Bielefeld Library will present BASE (Bielefeld Academic Search Engine) as a best-practice example of cross-system metadata communication and standardization.
- Ronald Snijder of the OAPEN Foundation will discuss the various routes from publisher to reader and the critical role metadata conversion plays in this process.
Furthermore, a combined use case of the projects OA-STRUKTKOMM and OA-META will be introduced by Prof. Dr. Michael Reiche and Diana Tillmann from OA-STRUKTKOMM, and Nina Tscheke of OA-META.
