It’s been a fantastic quarter for us at ScienceOpen! Conferences, meetings, new collections, new upgrades, and even more upcoming collaborations that we are looking forward to announcing very soon.
Let’s have a look at some of the events that marked September!
RExPO22 kick-off
On September 1-3, ScienceOpen attended the events marking the start of the EU-funded project REPO4EU in Maastricht, followed by the first International Conference on Drug Purposing – RExPO22.
ScienceOpen is a proud member of the REPO4EU consortium and has already begun putting the pieces of a publishing platform in place for the inaugural conference, opening up the abstracts and posters for online discussion.

Together towards open meta!
After weeks of planning, the Road to Open Meta Conference convened industry experts in Leipzig to discuss the current metadata communications landscape, challenges, and best-practice based solutions from various projects and partners.
We had the great honor of co-organizing the Road to Open Meta Conference with HTWK Leipzig, where we presented the results of our current interventions in the field, the outcomes of our BMBF-funded project OA-META, and the incredible infrastructure built around BookMetaHub, which aims to increase book discoverability online through the enrichment and standardization of new and existing metadata.
In addition to the presentation of OA-STRUKTKOMM and OA-META project results, there were exciting contributions from COUNTER, Crossref, OAPEN, BASE, and the University of Michigan Press. In a poster session, other BMBF- funded projects presented results from the projects in the framework of the guideline for accelerating the transformation towards Open Access.

Peer Review Week
We marked Peer Review Week this year by presenting the results of our Open Peer Review Survey, which identified the diverse perspectives on open peer review and highlighted, among other things, the importance and relevance of open peer review in today’s academic environment.
ScienceOpen has actively facilitated the open peer reviewing process not only within its network but also across the digital publishing landscape since its inception.
Main take from the survey results: 1 in 2 scholars believes that open peer review is necessary for greater trust in scientific research.

Other news and events
Jumping from one event to the other, we also attended the first Open Science Festival in Germany which was held in Hannover this year, the annual meeting of the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishing – ALPSP in Manchester, the annual meeting of the Open Access Scholarly Publisher Association OASPA, and NISO’s virtual conference on the topic of Building Access, Openness, and Sharing.
It was a busy month, and it felt great to leave our home offices and be back on the road!
We are looking forward to exciting new events in the next weeks, among which:
- Frankfurt Book Fair, where we will have a stand this year: 4.2 L10! Drop by, sit down, and talk to us about ScienceOpen services for publishers and what else you would like to see us working on in 2023.
- Forum for Open Research in MENA, which will be bringing together leading international experts and key regional stakeholders, supports the advancement of open research across the Middle East and North Africa by facilitating the exchange of actionable insights and the development of practical policies. Our CEO, Stephanie Dawson, will be attending the Forum and is excited to meet many current and potential new partners from the region.
