Knowing where research was conducted is an important part of the context of a research article. This information is usually captured in an author’s “institutional affiliation”. Increasingly universities, institutes and companies are looking to understand how the research they produce is being used and shared in a broad digital context. This is only possible if all publishers use the exact same institutional information. To solve this problem ROR was created.
ROR is a community-supported open infrastructure that is driven by organizations and individuals from all over the world, and it includes persistent IDs and metadata for over 102,000 organizations. The Registry data is freely accessible via a search interface, REST API, and data dump, and ROR is currently the only completely open organization identifier primarily focused on affiliations.
ScienceOpen is pleased to announce that ROR IDs are now integrated in our manuscript submission system, facilitating author affiliation, and enhancing discoverability of our manuscripts in our network and beyond. A simple look-up in our interface allows authors and editors to easily find and insert the correct ROR ID for affiliation as part of the submission process.
ScienceOpen is home to over 60 open access journals hosting their content directly in our search environment of over 84 million articles.
ROR IDs will make it possible to quickly add the institutional affiliation to any new manuscript submitted through our system, and then let ScienceOpen’s discoverability tools do the rest. ROR IDs join our extensive list of hosting tools for journals, which include DOI deposit with Crossref, integration with ORCID, geolocation and institutional usage reports, and so on.

We aim to go beyond Open Access publishing to make the research articles and books we publish and host as interoperable within a digital environment as possible – that includes using persistent identifiers wherever possible.

Following best-practice for rich metadata, our XML-tagging includes the ROR ID but also the complete institutional wrapper for free text information. Thus, we are making sure your affiliation’s data is as persistent as possible without losing any of the richness of the departmental or institutional detail. Affiliation’s metadata, updated with a ROR ID, can of course also be exported and is sent to our third-party content distributors, see a snippet preview from our XMLs here:
List of preprint servers and journals
Authors on ScienceOpen can now list multiple affiliations and have the option to add their affiliation both as free text and as a ROR persistent identifier for institutions. They can benefit from our wide range of hosting tools in any of the preprint servers hosted on ScienceOpen.
